In order to acquire effective solution to the problems of disposing waste electric household appliances, Taiwanese government had drawn up “Waste Substance and Objects Treatment Act” which was passed by the legislature in 1997 and enforced in March, 1998. Following the legislation, Taiwan’s twelve major household electric appliance manufacturers formed a strategic affiliation by jointly setting up a company named “E&E Recycling” in August, 1998 for the purpose of reusing and recycling waste electric products. Yangmei Factory, the construction of which was completed in November, 1999 , is the first factory in Taiwan for recycling waste household electric appliances, occupying 14,000 square meters of land area and 4,000 square meters of building site. The recycling technology as well as equipment was introduced from the technical joint venture partner ADELMANN in Germany, and the technology developed domestically is also included. The operation at Yangmei Factory was officially started in January, 2000 with the approval rendered by the government. In June, 2000, Taipei Factory also commenced its operation for recycling five waste electric objects, which are televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and information products. Up to this year, the number of disposed waste electric household appliances has exceeded three million units. The certificate of international standards such as ISO14001 and OHSAS 18001 recognizing environment, safety, and health management systems, were also acquired.
